Snow/Icy Conditions and Collections
First and foremost, please take care!
Streetscene are currently prioritising clearing of roads and ensuring grit bins are plentiful. I am
aware that all three bins on the Badgers Walk estate were empty today. I contacted Streetscene and despite being so busy, they did priorise this and refilled them within an hour of request - so a huge thank you to them for this.
Please use the available grit but please prioritise it for the roads and not your own personal driveways. Estates such as Badgers Walk in particular only have one entrance/exit and Hollowbrook/Hillsdown in particular with its incline can be treacherous in icy conditions so its an absolute priority that this road
and its pavements are kept clear.
Some delays to general waste and recycling collections are expected. If your bins are not collected
on the scheduled day, please leave them out, as crews will return as soon as conditions allow.
Collection teams are working flat out in difficult conditions and appreciate everyone’s patience.

'Old Hall Cafe' Cafe at Wepre Park Visitor Centre - Temporary Closure
Please note that the café is currently closed while refurbishment work is completed,
specifically the replacement of the flooring. It was originally hoped the café would reopen this
weekend, however the work is taking longer than anticipated - reopening now expected to be around the weekend of 17th January, and any confirmed updates will be shared promptly.
Marion and the café team apologise for any inconvenience and would like to thank everyone for
their patience while the contractors continue works to reopen as quickly and safely as possible.
For information, the nearby public toilets remain open as usual each morning until approximately 4pm.

CAFGAS CIC / Nanny Biscuit Christmas Party
As myself and Cllr Roberts have significant volunteering roles in helping execute this
event each year, it's always a proud moment when the day arrives and everyone is seated, together,
and having fun.
This gathering is always special, but this year felt extra meaningful with
individuals being recognised through a new element to the party - Local Community Appreciation Awards 💛 Every single one so
deserving, showing patience and kindness to others without hesitation.
Special shoutout to our South Ward winner Gill Wilcock who thoroughly deserved it for her community volunteering
work, litter picking, green projects including the Connah's Quay Community Gardens. All winners are detailed on the
CAFGas CIC facebook page which is well worth a
read.
Huge thanks to everyone involved, James, Kerry, Laura, Nanny Biscuit volunteers,
Ian Gibbons - all who attended and all the entertainment who always give
their time for free. Planning starts back in August/September and doesn’t stop until the day
itself, but it’s worth every single minute. There are lots of pics on my facebook page of the event - I will
upload them to this website when I get a moment! 📸✨

Connah's Quay Salvation Army - Christmas Hampers
Eveline and David Haines from our local Salvation Army have become familiar and valued faces in the community over the years, and I’m always proud to support and promote the work they do.
The Salvation Army is far more than a place of worship. Outside of Sunday services, it operates as a genuine community hub – somewhere people can drop in, make connections, and feel welcome, whatever their circumstances.
Throughout the year they run a wide range of groups and sessions for all ages, including baby and toddler groups, which I personally attended with my own son many years ago. There’s Craft and Natter, advice sessions, and a packed calendar of events. Their summer BBQ is always a firm favourite, as are the Harvest Festival, Games Night, Pie Night and more.
This week, volunteers have been exceptionally busy preparing hampers for those most in need, made possible through generous donations of food and money from local businesses and residents. This year, 35 hampers have been put together and will be distributed to local families.
I simply want to say a huge thank you to Eveline, David, and all the volunteers for the tireless work they do for our community, all year round.

Connah's Quay Old People's Association Christmas Lunch
Cllr Vince Roberts and myself attended the association's Christmas Lunch at the
Civic Hall, and it was an absolute pleasure to be there. As elected town council representatives of the group,
we’re both proud to reguarly volunteer at, and support such a brilliant charity group who offer warmth, company, and friendship to our 60+ community. Their weekly bingo
and the many outings and activities run all year round, bring so much, to so many.
Wishing all members a very Merry Christmas from us both. 🎄✨

Clothing Collections - Book Online for Free
For anyone who struggles to get to clothing banks or charity shops, I can really
recommend icollectclothes.co.uk. I
recently used their free collection service for around ten bags of donations which I collected
on behalf of South Ward residents who struggle with mobility or lack of transport. It’s a great
alternative to those having difficulty carting it all to the local charity shops - just book online, pick your collection dates, choose your charity
(or several), leave the bags outside or in a safe place, and they’ll collect them for you.
It's super easy and completely free - I chose 'Kidney Care UK' this time, but there are a number available to choose from.

Proposed Tree Planting – Mold Road, Connah’s Quay
Residents in South Ward, especially those along Clivedon Road, may be interested in recent plans for new tree planting along the Mold Road verge (5 trees and a replacement as shown below). This comes following requests from local residents and supports the Government’s Nature Recovery initiative. It is also part of a grant-funded project and Flintshire’s Urban Tree & Woodland Plan.
The aim is to enhance local greenspace, support wildlife, and contribute to wider nature recovery efforts.
I personally welcome this improvement, but I want to ensure everyone is fully informed and able to comment. Collected comments need to be submitted to the biodiversity team before Tuesday 16th December so please DM me or email. They will be issuing letters to residents in the vicinity shortly.

If you’d like to donate new toys or gifts for local children, please drop them off at any collection point by Friday 13th December so the Elves have time to sort and wrap them before Christmas. Thank you!

Friends of Wepre Park Christmas Fayre
Really enjoyed attending the 'Friends of Wepre Park' Christmas Fair at the Visitor Centre/Old Hall Cafe today 🎄✨ Always a lovely atmosphere and great to catch up with the traders who turn up year after year to support it.
The Friends group put in a huge amount of work for the park on top of what FCC deliver, and I’m genuinely proud in supporting them whatever way I can. ❤️🌲
A special shoutout to 'Joyful Beads' - two brilliant, enterprising young teens from South Ward with a gorgeous range of handmade gifts 🎁 Lovely to chat with them, and fantastic to see young people in our town turning their creativity into a little business.
Great day all round! ⭐Thanks to Debbie and the cafe team who always offer great hospitality in the cafe.

Connah's Quay Christmas Fayre
🎄 The Connah’s Quay Town Council Fayre was a real success, and it was fantastic to see so many people come out to support it - thank you.
Well done to all the school children in the Christmas Card Competition, and the local school choirs were brilliant, a real joy to hear, and they should all be proud.
The tree lighting and the children singing together captured the Christmas spirit perfectly.
A big thank you to our Chair for hosting and lighting the tree, his consort Ann for her support, and of course Ian Gibbons, Santa, the Town Council staff, volunteers, all involved with its organisation for our community. 💛🎅✨

Knife Crime - Keeping our children safe
As many of you know, I am a strong supporter of
Edwin Duggan’s Anti-Knife Crime initiative, and
North Wales Police are once again running a knife-amnesty campaign. If you have any concerns about
knife crime, whether for yourself, a friend, or a family member - please reach out to Edwin for
guidance via his website (link above) or contact North Wales Police directly.
The message remains clear: situations involving weapons can escalate far more quickly than people
realise, and seeking advice early is a vital step in staying safe and preventing serious
consequences. It takes only a single moment, a single action, to devastate lives. We sadly see/hear of
this happening virtually very single week and it must be stamped out. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help.
As an update: Well done to our local policing team (PC Hannah and PCSO Em) for bringing their #opceptre education to
students at Deeside College this week. Raising awareness with this age group about Drug safety and Knife
crime awareness is essential. 👍

🚸 Road Safety Reminder – Please Take Care Near Our Schools 🚸
A reminder of how important road safety is, especially now during these darker winter months.
👨👩👧 Parents & Carers
Please park considerately around schools. Avoid the zigzag areas, keep driveways clear, and remember that young children can be easily distracted when crossing the road.
🚶♀️ Children & Families
Take a few minutes to talk about road safety - looking both ways, wearing something bright or reflective, and taking extra care when cycling or walking to school.
Our children are still learning; we, as adults, must set the example by driving and parking responsibly.
Connah’s Quay Town Council has provided all four local primary schools with Kid Lollipop signs to help highlight the dangers. It’s great to see our schools doing their part, including Wepre, but the safety of our children relies on all of us working together.
Please, let’s make sure every child gets to and from school safely. 💛

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY & ARMISTICE DAY
A big thank you to all our community who attended the Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Commemoration on Tuesday.
At the 11th hour, local school children and members of the public gathered to pay their respects in a touching act of remembrance. We were honoured to be joined by Lord Barry Jones, who gave a reading alongside Captain David Haines of the Salvation Army and Colin Sargeant. Wreaths were laid by local businesses and organisations, while the children placed poppies with great care and respect.
Sincere thanks to everyone who attended, and to the Connah’s Quay & Shotton
Interservices Committee for their dedication, planning, and continued work and in educating our young
people to ensure the memory of those who served lives on.
🎖️ We will remember them. Lest We Forget. ❤️

🎃 A Really Important Reminder! 🎃
As Halloween comes to an end, please don’t discard your pumpkins in local woods, parks, or green areas. Although it might seem harmless, pumpkins are bad news for wildlife — they can upset natural habitats and even harm animals that try to eat them. 🦔🍂
✅ Instead, please reuse or recycle responsibly: Cook and eat what you can - pumpkin soup, pie or roasted seeds are great options! Or, cut up and pop in your green food waste bin or compost heap.
Let’s all do our bit to keep our community and wildlife safe this autumn. 💚

🌿 Wepre Community Planter Update 🌿
I’m really pleased to share that, following the confirmation of funding and the order now being placed, the planter will soon be fully replanted with a mix of fresh bulbs, shrubs, and pollinator-friendly plants — carefully selected to create a vibrant, colourful display while supporting our local wildlife. 🐝🌼
Since the Welsh Government declared a Nature Emergency in 2021, biodiversity remains high on the agenda. Small local actions like this all contribute to the bigger picture — helping nature thrive while making our community spaces more enjoyable for everyone. 💚
A huge thank you to Gill, a local volunteer who has been helping care for this planter and has even put out a box for any spare bulbs residents might like to donate to boost next spring’s colour. 🌷
And a special thank you to Sarah and Harry from the FCC Biodiversity Team, and Adriana from Streetscene, for their continued support and enthusiasm — they have all been so supportive. 👏
If anyone wants to help out, please >get in touch and I'll give a shout out when the order arrives.

Rosie. The Connah’s Quay Angling Club continue to do an outstanding job managing and maintaining this
much-loved community facility all year round. Their efforts are vital — not only for keeping the
area looking its best, but also for ensuring the safety of anglers and the proper upkeep of the site.
I do visit regularly to see how things are going and just wanted to say a big well done and thank you to everyone involved!

International Day of Older People 2025
On Saturday, Cllr Roberts and I attended the International Day of Older People 2025, hosted by the 50+ Action Group (Flintshire)
It was a brilliant celebration of ageing well in Flintshire, with a fantastic turnout from our older community, plenty of stalls, inspiring speakers, and a lovely young singer who treated everyone to songs from across the decades 🎶
Great to see the Chair and Consort of Connah’s Quay Town Council there too. As elected
representatives of the Connah’s Quay Old People’s Association, Vince and myself were

It was a privilege to meet so many distinguished guests, and dignitaries from across the region. We thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and are grateful to our Chair for the kind invitation.

Speeding Concerns – Wepre Lane, Connah’s Quay 🚨
I want to reassure residents that I am continuing to raise your concerns about persistent speeding along Wepre Lane. I have pressed GoSafe again for action, but so far no presence has been seen on this stretch of road.
It would help add weight if residents could report any matters directly to GoSafe here:
Report a Community Concern
I know how worrying this is - pets are being killed, and residents are rightly fearful that it could only be a matter of time before there is a serious accident. I have made it clear that this situation is unacceptable and needs urgent attention.
Please be assured that I am doing my very best to push for a response. I will keep you updated as soon as I receive further information.

⚠️ Cold Call Alert – Be Cautious! ⚠️
I’ve received a report of cold calling from someone claiming to be from an electricity company. The elderly resident had not arranged or expected a visit. The caller wanted access to the home to “do something with the supply.” They had a card, but the resident wisely refused entry.
Remember: if you’re not expecting a visit, you are absolutely within your rights to decline access. The person left without leaving any paperwork and said they would be back.
If anyone else had a visit like this in the last day or so, please let me know so I can pass on to the community policing team, or please ring 101 to report it.

New Red Dog Waste Bin Installed on Ffordd Newydd
I’m pleased to share some good news – after a few months of lobbying the council (since 6th May 2025), a new red dog waste bin has now been installed on Ffordd Newydd, by the old Wepre Stores.
This came about after a local resident raised concerns with me about the dual-purpose black public bin at the end of Ffordd Coed Wepre
(backing onto the playing fields of Wepre School). They reported it was often overflowing with rubbish,
made worse by dog waste bags hanging out the sides, piled on top and worse still scattered on the floor.
As a litter picker, I went to see the problem myself the following day and found the situation exactly
as described – an awful mess with considerable odour. I cleared it best I could at the time and have been monitoring the area regularly since. It was clear the site needed an additional dedicated dog waste bin.
After a lot of back and forth with Flintshire County Council, I’m pleased to say that a
red dog waste bin has now been installed. Although it wasn’t placed exactly where
the resident originally suggested, it is close by and a very welcome addition - the dual black bin has also been moved forward away from the property.
The red bins are especially helpful as they have lids, reducing the unpleasant odours that were
previously an issue.
A big thank you goes to Wayne Jones at Streetscene, whose involvement at a later stage helped secure the installation.
I hope this makes life easier for local dog walkers. Picking up after your dog is greatly appreciated, and the least we can do is make sure there are proper facilities to dispose of it.

A Quiet Start to August – But Still Plenty Happening Locally!
With the Town Council on its summer break, there’s no ordinary meeting this month – so August is off to a relatively quiet start on the council front. But that doesn’t mean things are quiet in the community!
Today, I popped along to the Wednesday Coffee Morning at the Salvation Army, and as always, it was a pleasure to be there. The event runs every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm, offering a warm welcome, a cuppa, and a bite to eat – with tea, coffee, and bacon butties etc all at really low prices. It's a great place for a natter and to connect with familiar faces (or meet new ones).
Also at the same day and time, during the summer holidays, the main hall is opened up for families
with a lovely ‘Family Drop-In’ play space – a brilliant free option to help keep the
kids entertained with games, crafts and a run around.
It’s always such a lovely, friendly group of people who attend, and if you’ve never been before, I’d really recommend popping in and saying hello.
In addition to their weekly coffee mornings, the Salvation Army hosts Sunday Worship every week at 10am, and they’ve got a special event coming up too – a Garden Party on Saturday 30th August to celebrate the end of summer. Expect food, friendship, and the usual warm welcome. It’s always a lovely event and a great way to round off the season.
Let’s continue supporting the brilliant community spaces and groups that keep Connah’s Quay
connected.

Tackling Problem Parking – Advice from Police and Highways
Following a growing number of complaints from residents across Connah’s Quay – particularly in the South Ward – about dangerous and inconsiderate parking, I’ve taken steps to raise awareness and seek out clear advice on what can be done.
As a result, I’m pleased to say I’ve had an article published in the Leader Live, which outlines the information I received after contacting North Wales Police and local authorities.
While irresponsible parking is unfortunately widespread, I’ve had multiple residents in our ward reach out with serious concerns – from blocked pavements to vehicles dangerously parked on junctions and corners. These aren't just annoying; they’re potential hazards for pedestrians, people with prams, wheelchair users, and other road users.
In a nutshell:
- Dangerous or obstructive parking – report it to the police via 101. This includes blocking driveways, parking on zigzags, or creating a visibility hazard.
- General parking complaints (e.g. inconsiderate but not dangerous) – report to Flintshire Council Highways via the Streetscene service online or by phone.
The full article includes the full advice I received from North Wales Police and is worth a read if this is something that’s affecting your street or neighbourhood.
👉 Click here to read the article on Leader Live.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to contact me about this. Please continue to report incidents through the correct channels and copy me in if you'd like me to follow up.
Let’s keep working together to make our streets safer and more accessible for everyone.

🏞️ Wepre Park Green Flag Award
🌿 I’m absolutely delighted to share that Wepre Park has once again been awarded the prestigious Green Flag status! 🏞️💚
The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised mark of excellence, celebrating parks and green spaces that meet the highest environmental standards, are beautifully maintained, and offer outstanding facilities for visitors. 👏
A huge thank you goes to our dedicated Park Rangers and the Wepre Stakeholders Group for the brilliant work they do all year round. Their ongoing commitment keeps Wepre Park the amazing space that it is – clean, safe, welcoming, and packed with things for families and nature-lovers to enjoy.
Here in Connah’s Quay – especially for those of us living in the South Ward – our green spaces are a real community asset and something we should all be grateful for. 🌳
A big well done also to Bailey Hill and Greenfield Valley for earning their well-deserved Green Flag Awards too! 💪
Let’s keep championing and protecting our parks – they’re not just lovely places to visit, they’re vital to our health, wellbeing, and local environment. 💚

Summer Fun in Full Swing at the Quay Play Scheme!
🎉 I had the pleasure of spending time at the Quay Play Scheme this morning alongside Cllr Vince Roberts and our Town Clerk, Suzanne – and what a fantastic visit it was!
The place was absolutely packed with happy, energetic children making the most of everything on offer. From the activities tent and scout hut to football matches and all the indoor and outdoor fun around the community centre – there was something for everyone.
One of the biggest hits of the day was the huge water slide down the bank – a brilliant sight and hugely popular with the kids! 💦🛝
What really stood out? Not a phone in sight. Just loads of physical play, laughter, and good old-fashioned fun. It was heartening to see so many children fully engaged and enjoying themselves.
It was also great to catch up with PC Mark, our schools police officer, who was doing a brilliant job chatting with the children. It’s always lovely to see positive community policing in action, and the kids clearly enjoyed his presence.
We’re really proud that Connah’s Quay hosts this incredible scheme for the entire six weeks of the summer holidays. It’s a huge credit to everyone involved – the planning, the activities, the care, and the smiles say it all.
A big thank you to all the staff and organisers – you’re doing an amazing job and it’s so appreciated by the community. 👏💚

🚶♀️🚶♂️ Ward Walkabout
Yesterday evening I joined Cllr Vince Roberts and PCSO Gemma Wilde for a walkabout around
Badgers Walk, mainly just following up on some recent feedback from residents and get a better feel
for what’s happening in the area.
A big thank you to everyone who stopped to chat with us - it was lovely to meet so many of
you, and we really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.
We’ll continue doing these walkabouts in different areas of the ward on an ad-hoc basis,
depending on PCSO availability, to make sure we’re regularly out and about in the community.
During our walk, I noticed a few vegetation issues that had already been sorted since I
previously reported them – which is great to see! I’ve also spotted a few more things to raise,
including in the Hillsdown playpark, which I’ve reported today.
If you have any concerns or issues you’d like to raise, please feel free to get in touch
with me directly. This community really matters to me, and I’ll always do my best to help where I can.
Huge thanks to PCSO Wilde (a fantastic community officer) for taking the time out of her busy schedule to attend.

🌼 Flintshire Meadowfest Celebrates Nature and Community Fun 🌿
What a brilliant day at Flintshire Meadowfest! Families enjoyed a day of traditional,
screen-free fun, with children getting hands-on with willow weaving, campfire cooking, face painting,
and magical storytelling in the cosy tent.
The event brought together communities and organisations with a shared passion
for nature. Great conversations were had with the FCC Biodiversity team, Bionet, and Streetscene,
while it was also a pleasure to reconnect with Harry from the Conwy Biodiversity team and meet
an inspiring wildflower trunk roads champion from Llanrwst, whose stall made entirely from
recycled materials was a real joy to see - totally my thing!
A huge thank you goes out to all the organisers and everyone who came along to
support the day – a fantastic mix of fun, learning, and green inspiration! 🌱

🚧 Wepre Lane Safety Concerns Raised 🚧
Yesterday, it was reported on social media that a double-articulated HGV attempted to drive down the narrow part of Wepre Lane between Connah’s Quay and Northop Hall, causing significant traffic
disruption for other road users. I have been contacted recently by residents raising concerns about issues on this stretch of road – including near misses,
road rage, and confusion caused by inadequate signage.
The details have been logged online with the Flintshire Council’s Highways Team, along with resident feedback including suggestions for clearer warnings
for HGV drivers, improved priority signage, and the possibility of physical restrictions like a height barrier and priority traffic flow signs.
Thank you to everyone who has shared their experiences so far. Please do continue to raise concerns, but remember — incidents shouldn’t just be posted on social media. For them to be properly investigated and acted upon, they must also be reported through the appropriate official channels. Your input plays a vital role in making our roads safer for everyone.

Place Making Meeting Update
On Tuesday evening, town councillors were invited to attend what I believe will be one of
the most important meetings of the year for Connah’s Quay – a 'Place Making Meeting' focused on
regeneration and improvements across the town.
The purpose of the meeting was to share a draft outline of the research and findings
gathered so far by the council's regeneration team. Councillors were asked to view, discuss, and offer
feedback on what we felt should be key priorities for the town moving forward.
A wide range of topics were raised, including: Better town signage, Litter and cleanliness,
Enhancements to green spaces, Improvements to cycle paths and more.
However, one clear and pressing priority emerged: the need for additional short-stay parking — particularly around the civic area — to help retain and attract visitors and encourage greater use of local facilities.
We now have the opportunity as councillors to pull together our individual written
contributions to strengthen the draft plan. Once updated, the proposals will be shared with county
councillors and then opened up to public consultation.
As your local councillor, I’ll be encouraging as many residents as possible to take part
and have your say. This is a real chance to shape the future regeneration of Connah’s Quay – and your input
matters.
With thanks to the regeneration team, Charlotte Wilcock, Karen Whitney-Lang and Chris Jones for their commitment so far and for our town clerk Suzanne Wilson who came in especially during her annual leave to chair the meeting, it is very much appreciated.

A Week of Community Connections and Planning Ahead
On Wednesday morning, I had the pleasure of attending a committee meeting with the Connah's
Quay Old People’s Association. We discussed some exciting ideas for upcoming events, including
afternoon treats, a buffet, plans for the annual Christmas meal at the Civic Hall, and a surprise
being considered for the New Year. The weekly bingo and social meet-up means a lot to the members,
and it’s genuinely rewarding to help plan ahead and suggest new ways to make them feel valued.
Later that afternoon, Vince and I visited Bernie Trickett’s Deeside Photo Display at the
Town Council Office – it was absolutely fantastic (see article of 9th July). Afterwards, I attended the Connah’s Quay Summer Festival debrief. It was a productive session with
great discussion, reflections on what worked well, and some brilliant ideas already in motion for
next year. Huge thanks were given to everyone involved for their hard work and input.
On Friday, I took part in the Wepre Stakeholder meeting where recent developments
were reviewed, including the disappointing news of a break-in at the visitor centre, which is
currently under police investigation. Despite that, there was lots of positivity shared by the
groups involved. We were also joined by project officer Carolyne Prew from 'Keep Wales Tidy' – it was a real
pleasure to meet her and chat about everything from litter picking to local environmental
projects. I left with a much deeper understanding and lots of helpful takeaways.
All in all, it’s been a busy and productive week – with plenty more to look forward to
next including a meet up and walkabout with the local PCSO.

Bernard Trickett’s Last Nostalgic Exhibition of Deeside Photos
Had the pleasure of attending this photo display, and what a collection it was!
The room was filled with an incredible archive of Deeside’s history – from maritime
documents and old maps, to school photos, street parties, armed forces, parades, and ships from the
Port of Connah’s Quay – dating all the way back to the 1800s. Some of these pieces are one-of-a-kind
and fortunate to have been so carefully preserved. Nice to see so many books and pamphlets written by
Bernie and other locals too.
It was a real pleasure to meet Bernie himself, a kind and passionate man who was more than
happy to share the story of how it all began. Huge thanks to Bernie, Ron, and the volunteers who
brought this treasure trove to life for us all to enjoy.

Connah's Quay Town Council Summer Festival 2025
🌞 What an incredible day at the Connah’s Quay Summer Festival! The sense of community was truly inspiring. 💙
The Vice Chair and I were thrilled to meet so many of you – apologies if we missed anyone; we were volunteering as set up assistants, dignitories,
car park attendants and anything else we could assist with, literally dashing around all day! 🙈
Thanks to your generosity at the gates, an amazing £750 was raised for the Chair’s chosen charity, Claire House Children’s Hospice. 💐
We’re so grateful to everyone who donated – your support makes a real difference to a wonderful cause.
From the entertainment and hospitality to our incredible public, volunteers, staff, and
park rangers – you helped make this the highlight of our calendar. Feeling proud, thankful, and
truly overwhelmed. 🙌 View Photo Gallery

Bringing Back the Bloom: A Fresh Look at Connah’s Quay Wildflowers
Following a great conversation with Amanda and Harry from the Biodiversity Team - who
I had the pleasure of meeting at the Buzzy Bee event in Wepre Park this past May - I raised some concerns about the state of the wildflower program in Connah’s Quay.
When the scheme was first introduced, I remember the results being quite specatacular.
The first year’s annual wildflower patches were vibrant, colourful, and brought a real uplift to the
community - very much like the sea of daffodils we enjoy each Spring along Mold Road. Unfortunately,
it feels like that same impact hasn't been sustained in recent years, and the town has seen far
fewer displays than neighbouring areas such as Flint.
As someone passionate about conservation, I do appreciate the distinction between annual
and perennial wildflower mixes. Each has its benefits: annuals provide immediate bursts of colour,
while perennials return year after year, supporting long-term biodiversity and providing vital
forage for pollinators. Both have a place, and both play a vital role in local ecology. However,
I couldn’t help but feel that Connah’s Quay may have been overlooked when it comes to the
distribution and maintenance of these habitats.
Amanda and Harry were really receptive to the feedback and kindly said they would look
into it. I’ve since followed up with an email to the Flintshire
Biodiversity Team, firstly to thank them for the incredible work they continue to do across the
county, but also to formally request that the wildflower strategy for Connah’s Quay be reviewed
and potentially refreshed.
I look forward to hearing their thoughts and will share any updates here as soon as I can.

Your Invite to Join CQ South’s Neighbourhood Watch
I'm pleased to share that I’m now an official Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator and have created a new
watch for Connah’s Quay South Ward.
My aim is to help build this into a simple but effective way for residents to stay
connected, keep an eye out, and support one another in our neighbourhood.
I’ve created a new Facebook group for the ward, which I'm pleased to say is already getting some
engagement - you are welcome to join here:
👉
Connah’s Quay South Watch Facebook Group
The group will share: ✅ Updates on local scams ✅ Information from the police ✅
Community safety tips ✅ Notices about local get-togethers
I’m aware that there are other Neighbourhood Watch groups active in the area, and this group isn’t intended to replace them. Instead, it aims to complement their efforts — we’re all working towards the same goal of a safer, more connected community.
As always, if you witness something suspicious or experience anti-social behaviour, please report it to the police or relevant authority first. This group is here to offer additional support, connection, and shared awareness — not to act as a replacement for official channels.
It’s specifically aimed at residents in Connah’s Quay South, but if you live nearby and
want to be part of it, you’re very welcome to join.
For those not on facebook, I will be setting up a newsletter subscription, online first
and I will see if I can attract some funding to be able to issue paper copies to those not online.
Let’s all work together to strengthen our community connections and keep our neighbourhood safe and supportive.

Wepre Park Site Visit - Summer Festival Preparations
Town Councillors and staff visited the park this morning for the final site meeting, and everything is coming together beautifully in preparation for this year’s Town Council Community Summer Festival.
The festival takes place on Saturday 28th June 2025, with the opening ceremony at 11am. While there will sadly be no parade this year due to the high cost of road closure charges by Flintshire County Council, the day is still packed with entertainment and activities for all ages.
Expect a fun fair, live stage performances, a beer tent, wrestling, a dog show, fantastic stalls, and much more. The event is expected to finish around 9pm.
Several councillors and I will be volunteering and helping out throughout the day.
Please do come along, enjoy the festival, and don’t hesitate to stop for a chat - we’d love to see you!

Playpark Improvements – Fron Road Site Visit Update
Following the 2022 local elections, an agreement was made between Flintshire County Council (FCC) and
Connah’s Quay Town Council (CQTC) to jointly fund upgrades, improvements, and repairs to local play
areas. Each party committed £10,000 per year, bringing the total annual investment to £20,000.
It was agreed that one play area would be selected each year based on assessed need, rotating across
the four wards to ensure fair coverage. Since 2022, play areas in Golftyn, South, and Central wards
have already benefited from this funding.
Next in line for 2025 is the Fron Road play area and multi-sports zone in the Wepre ward. A site
visit was recently held between Connah’s Quay Town councillors and Richard Roberts, FCC’s Play Design
Officer, to assess which items of equipment should be prioritised for replacement and to explore
indicative costings. All town councillors were formally invited to attend, myself Cllr Rachael Fenwick (South), Cllr Antony Wren (South), Cllr Vince Roberts
(Central), Cllr Manship and Cllr Roz Mansell (both of Wepre) attended on the day. When available, these proposals
will be brought before Full Council for consideration.
Sincere thanks to Richard for his time and valuable input. I’ll continue to share updates as this
project progresses.

Salvation Army Community BBQ Party
Cllr Vince Roberts and I had a lovely afternoon at the summer BBQ hosted by the Connah's Quay Salvation
Army on Dee Road. It had been a while since we last caught up with our friends there, and it was a
pleasure to reconnect.
Thankfully, the weather stayed dry and the event was filled with friendly conversation. A big thank you
to Eveline and David Haines, along with all the volunteers, for organising this much-loved annual
gathering. It’s a fantastic way to kick off a busy community calendar that we’re proud to be part
of.
Special thanks also to PCSO Gemma Wilde for attending and taking the time to speak with residents—her
continued support is always appreciated.
We’re looking forward to many more events like this in the months ahead.

Helping EJ’s Pigeon & Dove Rescue Continue Its Vital Work
Recently, I was able to deliver two donated bags of feed to the wonderful EJ’s Pigeon & Dove Rescue & Rehab here in Connah’s Quay South. This small, home-run rescue is a vital lifeline for injured, disabled, non-releasable, and unwanted racing pigeons, as well as wild birds from across the area. EJ also provides sanctuary for local foxes and badgers when needed.
The rescue is currently caring for around 100 pigeons and doves. Although space is full, the demand for help never stops. The rescue is entirely self-funded, and the cost of feed is a constant challenge.
A huge thank you to Gary Sibbald for kindly responding when I reached out for help with the feed donation.
Please consider visiting EJ’s Facebook page, giving it a like or follow, and checking out the Amazon
wish list pinned at the top. Even the smallest gesture—a bag of feed or a few pounds—makes a real
difference to the care of our most vulnerable wildlife. Let’s help keep this local lifeline going.

Eye 2 Eye Group for the Sight Impaired
I had a lovely phone chat today with a local lady from our ward who is sight impaired —
she described the Eye 2 Eye group as a real lifeline. Based in Garden City, it’s a safe,
familiar space where she’s made new friends, really enjoys the activities and found much needed
support. 🧡 If you know someone who could benefit from a group like this, please do pass it on.
Thank you!

Appointed as Town Council Representative to Wepre Park Stakeholder Group
At the recent June Town Council meeting, I was delighted to have been nominated and elected as the Town Council’s representative on the Wepre Park Stakeholder Group.
Biodiversity and conservation are causes I’m passionate about, particularly here in South Ward. I put forward my case during the nomination process and was pleased to receive the support of fellow council members.
The next Stakeholder Group meeting takes place on 11th July, and I’m very much looking forward to attending.
To explain a little more – the Wepre Park Stakeholder Group brings together key organisations and local businesses involved in hosting events and activities at the park. The group meets every two months and plays a vital role in sharing updates, resolving any issues or potential conflicts, and encouraging collaborative working.
Group members include representatives from Flintshire County Council, local councillors, Connah’s Quay Town FC/FC Nomads Youth, Connah’s Quay Angling Club, Friends of Wepre Park, Old Hall Café, and Wepre Parkrun.
📌 Council Minutes Note:
33. REPRESENTATIVE – To agree a Town Council representative to attend future Wepre Park Stakeholder Meetings. Members agreed that Councillor R. Fenwick be the elected representative and to report any relevant information to full council.

Afternoon Tea at the Connah's Quay OPA
We all had a lovely treat today at the Connah's Quay Old People's Association 🎉💙 Every Wednesday, they host a brilliant bingo session for the over-60s community, and today was one of those special afternoons where we came together to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea before the bingo began. 🍰☕
A huge thank you to the wonderful ladies who organised the food — it was absolutely delicious! 🙌
The Association offers so much more too — members can enjoy free events, day trips, a Christmas party, and more, all helping to create a fantastic sense of companionship and community.
If you or someone you know would benefit from joining, there are still a few places
available. Membership costs £21 per year and entitles you to the free day trips, parties etc plus you
can enter into the weekly bingo jackpot. Carers can come along as guests but will not be entitled to
membership priviledges unless they too become a member. Please contact me for more details or come along on Wednesday afternoon for 1pm - The Bingo usually
starts around 2pm after everyone has enjoyed a cup of tea and biscuits and the weekly raffle.

Training Courses
This evening I attended a New Councillor Induction training session with 'One Voice Wales'.
'One Voice Wales' serves as the principal organisation (ombudsman) representing community and town
councils across Wales, offering a range of services to support and strengthen their work.
A wide range of training courses are offered throughout the year, supporting ongoing development. Each councillor is encouraged to take responsibility for their own training programme, ensuring they stay up to date and continue to grow in their role. With the exception of
the mandatory Code of Conduct session, these are optional and allow each councillor to choose topics
that align with their interests or areas of focus. I’ve registered for six additional courses over
July and August, including one on biodiversity. I’m particularly looking forward to that session,
as I hope to build on my current knowledge and explore how it can be applied to help improve our town.

Flintshire Dementia Awareness Network
Today, Cllr Vince Roberts and I attended the Flintshire Dementia Awareness Network event, joining many local groups, carers, and organisations. It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout for this first session, which focused on making connections and beginning important conversations about how we can work together to create a more dementia-friendly and inclusive Flintshire.
As community councillors, one of our key responsibilities is to help signpost residents to the right support. Events like this are invaluable in helping us understand what services are available and how we can better connect people with them.
We’ll certainly be attending future sessions. Dementia affects so many of us in different
ways, and early support can make a real difference. There is help out there—and by working together,
we can make sure people know where to find it. 💜.

Buzzy Bee Day Event at Wepre Park
We had a fantastic time at Buzzy Bee Day in Wepre Park, celebrating World Bee Day!
It was a real highlight to meet entomologist Richard Dawson, who led several engaging
guided tours. His expert knowledge helped us catch and identify a wide variety of insects - kids
(and grown-ups!) really enjoyed it!
Thanks to Amanda and Harry from the FCC Biodiversity team for sharing their insights,
to The Little Honey House for their brilliant live hive displays, and to the Friends of Wepre Park
for putting on such a well-organised and enjoyable event.
And of course, a special shout-out to Ste, our Countryside Ranger, who always goes
above and beyond to make these events a success for the community 👏
The turnout was great, with lots of families enjoying the day. It was heartwarming to see
children so curious and enthusiastic about nature. We left having learned a lot - and with big
smiles on our faces! I will always be happy to support events like this.

Update & Connah's Quay Town Council AGM
This week has been just as busy. On Monday 12th, I attended the Friends of Wepre Park bi-monthly meeting. With my strong interest in conservation, I was pleased to receive a warm welcome and hear updates on the group’s fantastic work to improve our beloved Wepre Park.
Wednesday was the Town Council’s AGM, where I’m delighted to announce I was voted to
represent the Connah’s Quay Old People’s Association. Alongside my partner, Cllr Vince Roberts of
Central Ward, we volunteer there every Wednesday, and I’m excited to now support the group in an
official capacity. I was also elected to the members’ panel, and with Vince honoured as Vice-Chair,
I will serve as his official consort and very proud to support him in this role. Congratulations to
all the new committee members on their appointments!
On Friday, I attended the Wepre Park Stakeholders meeting, which was another great opportunity to
connect with new contacts and gain insight into how the various groups work together to support
the park.

Lighting of the Beacon - VE Day
Vince and I were so proud to attend the ‘Lighting of the Beacon’ ceremony this evening at Dock Road, Connah’s Quay.
It was a moving and emotional commemoration — with heartfelt readings in both English and Welsh,
speeches, a stirring hymn, and a poignant two-minute silence.
A huge thank you to all who organised such a respectful and meaningful evening, and to the many members of our community who came out to pay tribute together.

First Week Update
I was very pleased to attend my first Town Council meeting this week and received a really warm welcome. It’s been a busy start—I've already begun making introductions to local people and organisations, and I’ve started taking on casework too. Several residents have been in touch with enquiries; some have already been resolved, while others are ongoing but moving in the right direction. I’ve also repurposed my website and am in the process of bringing it up to date. There’s lots to do, but I’m enjoying every moment of it.

My role as councillor begins immediately. I've completed all formalities and am now
officially available — so if there’s anything I can help with, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

103 – Dave Vernon (Independent)
Thank you also to Chris and Dave for standing in the election and giving residents a
choice. Putting yourself forward is no small undertaking, and I respect their commitment.
I appreciate their kind congratulations following the result.
