🗳️ Senedd Election – How does your vote actually work?

There’s a lot of confusion around this, so here’s a simple explanation 👇

When you vote in a Senedd election, you’re not voting for councillors - you’re voting for Members of the Senedd (MSs).

Under the current system, you have one vote only. You can choose either a political party or an independent candidate.

✔️ The ballot paper lists political parties and independent candidates
✔️ Each party provides a list of candidates
✔️ You vote once for your chosen party or independent candidate
✔️ Seats are then allocated based on how many votes each party receives

👉 The more votes a party gets, the more representatives (MSs) they can send to Cardiff

It’s important to note that you are not voting for individual candidates within a party list. Instead, the party selects candidates in order from their list depending on how many seats they win.

🟦 In simple terms: you’re choosing a party (or independent), and that determines who represents your area.

Are you registered to vote?

To have your say in upcoming elections and by-elections, you must be eligible and registered to vote. If you have moved in the past 12 months, recently turned 18, or are unsure of your registration status, it's always best to check. If you work away, struggle to get out, or just want the convenience of not having to visit the polling station, you may want to consider applying for a postal or proxy vote (a proxy vote is when your authorise a trusted person to vote on your behalf - this can be temporary and for any reason).

You can check anytime with Flintshire County Council Electoral Services on 01352 702412. Please ask them to run you through the options. You can also:
